This stunning single storey extension added an extra four meters to the rear of a house in Bengeo, Hertford, to create a large modern kitchen-diner and living space. Architects’ drawings were drawn up and planning permission granted by the local authority.
Our client and the LH Gas team worked closely on the internal design and specification in order to achieve a modern look with contemporary technologies — whilst also creating a comfortable and satisfying room to enjoy.
Laying the foundations
LH Gas started with all the important and complex ground works. The footings were dug and poured and the new drainage systems installed. Once these had been approved by building control, the next stage began with our bricklayer constructing the walls and the LH Gas team installing the steels to open up the back of the house to create the open plan area.
Then our carpenters moved in to add floor and roof joists, ready for our roofer to add the internally drained flat roof system. Whilst all these works were taking place the rest of the team got on with building the patio.
Now all that remained to make the building watertight was the installation of the ORIGIN bespoke bi-folding doors. These doors are made of high specification light-weight aluminium in “Rail Colour 9007.” To add extra luxury the doors include electric blinds sitting within the double glazing.
With the extension now watertight the internal work could get underway. First came the plumbing and electrics to supply all areas. This also included an AV system incorporating four ceiling speakers and a sound bar. The system chosen was SONOS, a great app-based sound system that allows music to be played in symmetry through all speakers controlled from a phone or tablet.
All the walls were dry lined using moisture-proof plaster board. High end ceiling lights were then added as specified by our client to give a bright modern feel to the room. The extension was then fully plastered and painted.
The floor tiles were chosen from Pentagon Tiles in Harlow. They are unpolished concrete effect porcelain tiles, measuring 1.2m square. A Warm Up underfloor heating system was also installed to supply the room with the majority of the heat along with an ANCONA column radiator in Rail Colour 9007 supplied by the Radiator Company.
Our client wanted the kitchen to be practical yet modern with clean lines and two-tone colouring. This was achieved by installing a wall of tower units in grey, giving four large storage cupboards and individual integrated fridge and freezer. On the opposite side of the kitchen low level base units in white were installed with a half tower unit to incorporate the double oven and plate warming drawer.
The main focus of this room was to be the large central island, to be used for seating, cooking and food prepping. The unit below consists of two large drawers with a hidden cutlery drawer and two additional storage cupboards. Then, a stunning light grey quartz worktop was installed as one single piece on both sides. Four over-counter lights were also installed around the seating area of the island.
Once the worktop had been installed the new integrated hob was added to the island and the GROHE RED tap that supplies boiling water was added to the Franke under-counter sink.
Finally, the finishing touches. These included bespoke back painted glass supplied by HERTFORD GLASS.
The island was wrapped in white painted back glass giving a clean smooth finish and grey painted back glass was added to create a splash back along the low level base units with two bespoke glass shelves made in the same colour. On the island a pop up plug system was also installed.
Our client was delighted with the new modern space that the LH Gas team had created for his family and told us that the extension had transformed their living experience.
